Crossover is an agreement between Medicare and various supplemental insurance companies. The agreement permits Medicare to give the supplemental insurance information about claims which Medicare has processed. If your supplemental insurance company has an automatic crossover agreement with Medicare, you may request that they place your name on their crossover file. Medicare does not have access to delete supplemental insurance company’s records.

After they do this, when a Medicare claim is finalized, the information is automatically transferred to your supplemental insurer, depending on the specific agreement with the insurer.

Experiencing crossover problems? Please see the chart below for assistance on how to resolve common situations.

If your claims: Then:
Are not being crossed over to your supplemental plan Call your supplemental plan to see if they automatically crossover claims to Medicare. You will find your supplemental insurance’s phone number on your statement and/or the back of your insurance card.

If they do, ask them to add your information to the automatic file.

If they do not, have the doctor’s office submit a claim to your supplemental insurance.

Are being crossed over to a supplemental plan that you no longer have Call your former supplemental plan to have them correct their records. You want them to delete your name from the file that automatically sends claims to Medicare.

You can find your former insurance’s phone number on an old statement, the back of your insurance card, or through directory assistance.

Are being crossed over but in an inconsistent manner Most likely all is well with the automatic crossover file. Each supplemental insurance company instructs Medicare about the type of claims (adjustments, non-assigned, etc.) they want to receive.

If you are dissatisfied with the types of claims that your supplemental insurance accepts through crossover, please contact them directly. You will find your insurance’s phone number on your statement and/or the back of your insurance card.
